This one is a two-fer and will be as brief as the ones in the past few days because I think I am getting sick and I'm feeling tired and I bit groggy from all of the moving around I have done today.
Last night I learned how to single stitch crotchet from my girlfriend. I got pretty good at it too by the end of the night and made some headway on whatever it is I decide to make this into.
I'm not sure what it is about crocheting but it zones you out to the same degree that solitaire does. The repetition and instant working feeling, like snapping Legos together or something, the mechanical nature of the hand movement becomes a rhythm that I began to enjoy as Sam tried to hunt witches in Skyrim. It was a pretty okay night.
Beyond that I learned from my good poet/chef/wine-connoisseur/sorcerer Phil how to make a Ham and bean soup. Really simple stuff really:
One huge can of Great Northern beans
Three peeled carrots cut to equal chucks to cook uniformly
One onion diced
two solid stalks of celery cut thin (save the greens for a garnish)
three or four thinly sliced cloves of garlic
And a Ham steak cut into cubes (Throw the bone in for flavor)
Here's everything in the pot. You cook the onions and garlic til they are just about clear then add everything else in, let it cook for a few minutes then add the ham and stir it so the ham hits bottom so the fat can render a little. Then you pour in the beans with an additional bean can full of water with it. Then you crank it to a boil and let it simmer until the carrots are tender. And there you go, serve it with some noodles or rice for a bit of starch.
These were the left over bits from the ham steak that Phil told me to save to use for breakfast tomorrow. The skin fries like bacon in the leftover fats. Doesn't that sound amazing?
Anyway, I think for tomorrow I'm making pumpkin pancakes.
